FIL-AM COMMUNITY RESPONDS GENEROUSLY FOR VICTIMS OF KATRINA

New York, NEW YORK --- The Philippine Consulate General reports that as of 29 September 2005, a total of $22,883.00 worth of checks (including $167.00 cash) have been received from the Fil-Am community of the Tri-State area to aid the victims of Katrina. The donations were turned over to the Philippine Embassy in Washington D.C. which will, in turn, forward them to the American Red Cross.

Pledges amounting to $4, 250.00 are still being awaited. They were pledged during the recent dinner dance of the National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA) Eastern Region, last 10 September in Connecticut. More pledges have been given by individuals and various associations.

The Fil-Am Committee of 100s for Katrina Victims, a campaign initiated by Ms. Nimia Lacebal and Dr. Ellice Flores, two community leaders in New York generated $4,050.00, and was turned over to the Consulate General and added to the summed amount of donations.

The Ma-Yi Theater Company also raised funds for Katrina, including an auction of bottles of water, symbolizing hope and life, at their benefit event last September 20th. The sold bottles of water, plus other donations, amounted to a total of $3,225.00 which was turned over to the Consulate General on Sept. 29.

The Philippine Consulate General has mobilized key community leaders in the New York-New Jersey area to respond to the appeal of Ambassador Albert del Rosario to help in the recovery and rehabilitation efforts for the victims of Katrina. Consul General Cecilia B. Rebong reiterated this appeal through letters sent to community organizations in the region.

Donations are still being accepted and should be in checks, payable to the American Red Cross. They may be sent to Fil-Am Community Aid to Hurricane Katrina, c/o Philippine Consulate General, 556 Fifth Avenue, New York, N.Y. 10036.
